ABOUT THE SPEAKER

D. Randy Kuykendall joined the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in November 2004 with over 39 years experience in emergency medical and trauma services system development, design and administration.  His background includes his early career as a volunteer then professional firefighter/EMS provider in Las Cruces, NM, regional EMS and trauma director, former state EMS training coordinator at the New Mexico Department of Public Health,  public and private ambulance system direction and over 10 years experience as a health programs educator.  Randy was a nationally registered Paramedic for 32 years, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Development and a Master of Arts degree in Liberal Studies/Adult Learning from Regis University. 

Since coming to the Health Facilities and EMS Division (HFEMSD), he served as the Section Chief of the Emergency Medical and Trauma Services section for 7 years and continues to be responsible for the administrative oversight of these programs as well as managing the division’s Acute Care and Community based facility licensing program as the Division’s Deputy Director for two years.  On November 1, 2013, he was appointed as the director of the Health Facilities and Emergency Medical Services Division that is responsible for the licensing and certification of all health care facilities in Colorado as well as supporting Colorado’s EMS and trauma system.  His leadership background includes serving as the President of the National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO), CDPHE representative on the Statewide Emergency Medical and Trauma Services Advisory Council (SEMTAC) and the Emergency Medical Practice Advisory Council (EMPAC).  He is past president of the Committee on the Accreditation of Education Programs for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP). 

Randy has been married to his wife Sabra for 35 years.  They have four children and five grandchildren.  Randy’s hobbies include playing golf at every available opportunity, driving fast sports cars and enjoying everything Colorado has to offer.
